Payroll Services

GMS Accountants provides reliable payroll services for businesses in Cambridge and Nottingham. Whether you have a single director, one employee or a growing team, we can make sure everyone is paid accurately and your payroll information is submitted to HMRC on time.

Why Payroll Matters

Payroll involves much more than producing payslips. Employers must calculate wages, Income Tax, National Insurance, pension contributions and statutory payments correctly. Payroll information must normally be reported to HMRC on or before the date employees are paid.

Mistakes can result in incorrect wages, unhappy employees and time-consuming corrections with HMRC. Outsourcing the work gives you reassurance that deadlines are being managed while freeing you to concentrate on your business. You can learn more in our guide to understanding payroll.

" Graham helped us enormously in our first year of trading as a limited company. He was responsive with advice, and flexible when we needed to talk to ask questions, and this helped us to have confidence that we're doing the right things to manage the financial side of our business. "

Payroll FAQs

Do I need payroll if I am the only person working in the business?

A sole trader does not employ themselves and therefore does not operate payroll for their own drawings. However, a director receiving a salary from a limited company will normally need to be included on a payroll and reported to HMRC.

Do all employees need to join a workplace pension?

Not necessarily. Employees must be assessed against the auto-enrolment criteria. Eligible employees will normally need to be enrolled, while others may have the right to opt in. We can help calculate contributions and support the payroll side of the process. Read our guide to understanding pensions for more information.

How often can payroll be processed?

Payroll can be processed weekly, fortnightly, every four weeks or monthly. We will agree a timetable that suits your business and ensures the necessary information is received before payday.

Can you help decide how much a company director should be paid?

Yes. We can help company directors consider an appropriate salary alongside dividends and their wider tax position. Our guide to dividends explains how dividend payments differ from salary.

Can you take over an existing payroll?

Yes. We can transfer an existing payroll during the tax year, subject to receiving the necessary records and year-to-date figures from your current provider.
