Professional Background
I’m Graham Wesson, and I have worked in accounting since around the time my daughter was born. Accountancy wasn’t my first career choice. I began my working life as a Sales Analyst before moving into a sales role. Sales analysis suited me; sales did not.
My accounting career started in purchase ledger. Over the following ten years, I progressed to Finance Director, managing complete finance functions for SMEs with turnover of up to £12 million.
I started studying to become an accountant when I was 30. It was during my second accounting role, working as an Accounts Assistant, that I realised this was the right career for me. I have always enjoyed problem-solving and analysis.
I completed my CIMA qualification in just two years, around a year quicker than usual. This was mainly because, once I commit to something, I like to get it completed and move on to the next challenge.
Since 2020, I have specialised in supporting small businesses, company directors, sole traders and individuals. My services include payroll, VAT returns, year-end accounts, small business tax returns and Self Assessment tax returns.
Clients value my ability to tidy up financial problems, communicate clearly and explain accounts and tax without unnecessary jargon.
I’m not the typical suited-and-booted accountant. You are more likely to see me in a T-shirt and hoodie, but my approach to your accounts will always be professional, reliable and thorough.
From a Personal Perspective
I’m originally from Nottingham and am a lifelong Forest fan. I moved to Cambridge around 13 years ago, when my daughter was born, and I now have two children.
Hunstanton is our preferred holiday destination. We like it because everything is within walking distance and it is a familiar place where the children feel comfortable.
I’m a passionate cyclist, although I don’t cycle as much as I once did and have become something of a fair-weather rider. When I was more serious about cycling, I raced regularly and seemed to specialise in finishing fourth. I have completed the Fred Whitton Challenge twice and, together with my cousins, cycled from Scarborough to Blackpool in one day. I then attempted a half marathon the following day, which did not go quite as well!
I also play competitive squash at Comberton Squash Club and compete in the Cambridge leagues. Having enjoyed competition for most of my life, squash gives me the challenge I need and has become something of a passion, or possibly an obsession.
Work-life balance is important to me, although anyone at Comberton will confirm that I spend quite a lot of my free time on a squash court.
I still have roots in Nottingham, while my children, family and friends are also based around Cambridge. Working across Cambridge and Nottingham gives me the flexibility to maintain those connections and provide a genuinely local service in both areas.
