The Story Behind GMS Accountants
How squash, cycling and a love of helping small businesses all shape the way we work.
If you’ve ever met me — whether on a squash court, at a networking event, or out cycling around Cambridge or Nottingham — you’ll know I’m not your typical accountant. And that’s exactly what GMS Accountants was built on: a commitment to supporting small businesses with clarity, energy and a down-to-earth approach.
For many business owners, January means two things: renewed motivation and a long to-do list. Tax deadlines, forecasts, planning, compliance — the works. But it’s also the perfect time to rethink how your business runs and who’s in your corner.
Where GMS Accountants Began
I founded GMS Accountants with a simple mission: make accounting feel less frightening and more empowering. Instead of jargon, drama or over-complicating things, I wanted clients to feel supported, informed and confident in their decisions — whether they’re a start-up, a growing company, or a sole trader testing the waters.
From day one, I focused on three things:
✔ Clear, honest explanations
✔ Practical solutions
✔ A long-term partnership approach
That’s still the heart of the firm today.
Sport Shapes the Way I Work
The truth is, GMS Accountants has been shaped just as much by what I do off the clock as on it.
Squash
I’m an intermediate squash player at Comberton Squash Club, training multiple days a week, playing in leagues and constantly chasing improvement. Squash teaches you resilience, quick decision-making and the importance of strategy — all things I bring to client work.
When you’ve survived a five-game match, tax season isn’t quite as intimidating.
Cycling
Cycling is a big passion of my, if I had my time again I would have loved to have been a professional cyclist, exploring the world – I can’t think of a better way to be a professional athlete. Some of my best problem-solving moments happen halfway down a country lane. That balance keeps me focused and gives clients the version of me that’s switched-on, calm and solutions-driven.
Fitness, discipline and business
Just like sport, business is all about consistent effort, small improvements and having a coach in your corner. I try to be exactly that for my clients — reliable, knowledgeable and always pushing for better results.
